Programme details

Chevening Scholarships are the UK Government’s international scholarship programme for emerging leaders from eligible countries and territories. Funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations, the programme enables successful applicants to undertake an eligible taught master’s degree at a UK university.

Chevening Scholars study in the United Kingdom while developing their professional knowledge, leadership capabilities and international networks. The 2027–2028 selection process runs from applications opening in August 2026 through eligibility screening, independent reading committee assessments, shortlisting and interviews, with results announced from mid-June 2027. Successful scholars submit an unconditional university offer by July and begin their studies in the UK in September or October 2027.

Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
Commit to returning to your home country or country of award for at least two years after your scholarship ends.
Have at least two years of work experience acquired after completing your undergraduate degree, equivalent to at least 2,800 hours.
Hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for entry to a UK master's programme.
Have completed your undergraduate studies at least two years before the Chevening application deadline.
Apply to three different eligible UK university courses.
Receive an unconditional offer from at least one of your three eligible UK university course choices by the Chevening offer deadline.
Choose a full-time, UK-based taught master's course that starts in the autumn term and leads to a master's degree qualification.
The selected course must be between nine and twelve months in duration.
Applicants must not be resident in the UK at the time of application, except where an official Chevening exception applies.
Applicants must not hold British or dual British citizenship, except where an official Chevening exception applies.
Applicants must not have previously studied in the UK using a UK government-funded scholarship, except where an official Chevening exception applies.

Payment of university tuition fees.
Economy travel to and from the scholar's country of residence by an approved route.
Monthly personal living allowance to help cover accommodation and living expenses.
Arrival allowance.
Departure allowance.
Cost of one UK entry clearance visa application.
Contribution towards tuberculosis testing where this is required. ( If selected )
Travel top-up allowance.
Access to Chevening networking, professional development and engagement opportunities.

Two reference letters

Candidates invited to interview must upload reference letters from their two nominated referees.

Question 1

Describe a time when you demonstrated leadership. In your answer, please address the following: • What was the context or challenge you faced? • What specific actions did you take as a leader? • What was the outcome, and what did you learn?

Tell us about a professional relationship/network you have built and maintained in your workplace or in the community. In your answer, please address: • How was the relationship formed, and what made it important? • What did you contribute to this relationship, and what did you gain? • How have you sustained or developed this relationship over time? • How will these skills help you build connections within the Chevening community and beyond?

Please relate your answer to one of the UK priority areas for Chevening as referenced on the Chevening website: • What is the specific priority area you wish to address? • How will your chosen course equip you to address this theme in your home country? • Why have you selected your particular university in the UK? • How do you plan to immediately apply the knowledge or skills you will gain after your studies?
