Programme details

The OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship Programme is a four-week human rights training programme in Geneva for Indigenous people who want to strengthen their ability to protect and promote the rights of their communities. It is run by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and brings together participants from the English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese language programmes.

Fellows learn how the United Nations human rights system works, with particular attention to the standards and mechanisms relevant to Indigenous Peoples. They train alongside Indigenous representatives from different regions and build practical knowledge they can use in advocacy, community work, and engagement with international human rights institutions.

The programme is intended for Indigenous community representatives, advocates, and rights defenders who are supported by an Indigenous organization or community. After returning home, fellows are expected to share what they learned and help other Indigenous people engage more effectively with human rights mechanisms.

Eligibility requirements

  • Be an Indigenous person; non-Indigenous applicants are not eligible, even when they work closely with Indigenous communities or organizations.
  • Be proposed and supported by an Indigenous organization or community.
  • Commit to sharing the knowledge gained through the fellowship with other Indigenous people after returning to the nominating community or organization.
