Networking Essay – Academic and Community Relationships in Iraq
Awarded 2021
The prompt
Chevening is looking for applicants with strong professional relationship-building skills who can engage with the Chevening community and influence others in their profession. Explain how you build and maintain professional relationships, give clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future.
It is not a secret to say that networking is a fundamental element behind every success in one’s profession. A study conducted in Germany in Oct 2001 found that networking skill enhances the possibilities of success by more than 64%, and successful leaders spend more time communicating than their less-communicating counterparts. Working with better communication makes one more efficient, well informed on others’ experiences, and more creative in their works. Moreover, networking grants support and feedback for their plans and ideas. Besides, it increases one’s experience to be a better problem solver.
Through communication with the correct people, one can gain the biggest opportunities to advance in the profession. Academically, I am keen on maintaining good communications with local and international academics. I have direct communications with some of the brightest British Professors of Linguistics such as Professor Peter J. Roach and Professor Jane Setter, and others via email and over social media platforms. I contact with them to gain their guidance and consultation concerning Sociolinguistic issues as well as trending studies on this fields as it will be the axle of my studies in the UK.
Moreover, I have a good relationship with officials in Garmyan administration as well as the University of Garmyan who encourage, facilitate and support me to pursue my higher education and promised to promote my career from a teacher to university teacher to apply my goals and what I have learnt during my study in the UK.
During my participation in the Iraq Leadership Fellows Programme. I built strong connections with local and international famous philanthropists, trainers, social activism experts…etc. We continuously communicate and share ideas and thoughts. I am currently communicating with my trainer to get support and feedback on the details of the campaign that I and other activists plan to start within the beginning of the next year. This campaign’s ultimate goal is to decrease the school dropout by returning children to their seats to pursue their studies. Moreover, I maintain good communications with local officials in the fields of Education, Law, Health sector and governmental officials to whom we will expose our campaign and explain its goals. I am certain that we will gain all the necessary assistance and support to move forward with our campaign.
I will be honoured to contribute to the UK consulate and facilitate their work, and I am eager to offer my previous talents and expertise to students. I intend to encourage, support, help and give feedback to more students to apply to Chevening scholarship to become future leaders as I have always been doing so. Furthermore, I will contribute to the Kurdistan Chevening Alumni Association and get involved with more alumni to take responsibilities and make broader connections amongst the alumni of different programs, cohorts and cities so that we can get benefit from each other’s knowledge and experience to make better and beneficial changes to our communities.
