Stanford JSK Journalism Fellowships 2027–2028

Programme details

The John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford University give experienced journalism professionals nine months to investigate the problems they believe the industry needs to solve. Instead of arriving with a finished proposal, fellows bring a question, explore it alongside journalists from different backgrounds and develop new approaches through discussions, coaching, workshops and access to Stanford’s academic environment.

The programme runs from September 2027 through May 2028 and requires full-time residence at Stanford. Fellows participate in weekly cohort meetings, biweekly coaching sessions and occasional university events. They also share reflections publicly during the fellowship. The experience is designed around professional growth, experimentation and stronger journalism leadership. It does not award a degree or support individual reporting projects.

Eligibility requirements

  • At least five years of professional experience in journalism, news organisation operations or strategy, or an organisation that directly supports journalists. Student work and internships do not count.
  • Open to US and international applicants. Independent journalists and freelancers may apply if most of their professional work is within journalism.
  • Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English. TOEFL scores are not required.

Benefits

  • $135,000 stipend for the nine-month fellowship.
  • Stanford tuition covered, with opportunities to attend selected university classes and academic activities.
  • Stanford health insurance for fellows, with coverage and financial support for eligible dependents under the programme's arrangements.
